What is a Honeymoon?

A honeymoon is a traditional vacation taken by newlyweds shortly after their wedding ceremony to celebrate and spend time together.  Honeymoons can vary in duration and destination, ranging from a short weekend getaway to an extended and exotic vacation.

Why is it Called a Honeymoon?

The word originates from a combination of "honey" and "moon", dating back to various cultures and historical times. “Honey" refers to the sweetness and joy of the early days of marriage, and "moon" refers to the short-lived nature of that feeling, drawing an analogy to the waxing and waning of the moon.  In the past, newlyweds were given a month’s supply of mead, fermented honey, or other gifts to ensure bounty and fertility. Today, “honeymooning” has become a commonly recognized term for when newlyweds go on vacation after their wedding.

How Long is a Honeymoon?

Honeymoon durations vary based on cultural norms and personal preferences. In the past, it was common for couples to honeymoon for a week or two, but now, some couples honeymoon for several weeks. The duration depends on work commitments, budget, and destination, but the average honeymoon lasts roughly 7 - 10 days.

How Much Does a Honeymoon Cost?

The cost of a honeymoon can vary significantly due to factors like destination, duration, type of accommodation, planned activities, and overall travel preferences. On the lower end, a honeymoon budget may range from a few thousand dollars for a domestic or budget-friendly location and can increase to tens of thousands for a luxurious or international honeymoon.  However, the average US honeymoon is around $5,100.

Who Pays for the Honeymoon?

Traditionally (in the early 20th century), the honeymoon has been the groom's responsibility as a special and romantic gift to his bride. However, in modern times, this tradition has evolved, and the planning and financial responsibility for the honeymoon is often shared or handled in different ways based on the preferences and circumstances of the couple.

What is a Honeymoon Fund?

A honeymoon fund is often a gift registry where friends and family contribute money to help a couple finance their honeymoon. Instead of or in addition to traditional wedding gifts, couples can request donations to fund their honeymoon together.

How to Set Up a Honeymoon Fund

Use an online honeymoon registry platform:

There are several websites and online services dedicated to creating honeymoon funds. Examples include Honeyfund, Zola, and Blueprint Registry. These platforms often provide templates, customization options, and secure payment processing.  You could also do something simple like themed bowls designated for cash, however, remember that not everyone will have access to one payment option, so it’s important to offer a variety.

Decide How Guests Can Contribute:

Many platforms allow you to list specific categories guests can contribute to, like flights, hotels, meals, and activities. Alternatively, couples could have guests contribute to a general honeymoon fund.

Share the Details:

Share the details with your guests (or family and friends if you plan to have limited or no guests) once your honeymoon fund is set up. Include the link to contribute on your wedding website, invitations, or other communication channels.

Monitor Contributions:

Keep track of contributions as they come in. Many online platforms provide tools to monitor who contributed and how much. Consider sending thank-you notes or acknowledgments to contributors.

Express Gratitude:

During or after your honeymoon, thank your guests for their contributions. Share photos and stories from your trip to show how their support enhanced your experience.  You could do this utilizing online photo-sharing platforms, an email “newsletter” (or physical one), or even print out the best photos and send them directly to those who contributed with a hand-written thank you.

Handle Non-Monetary Gifts:

Be prepared to also handle traditional gifts for guests who prefer to give physical presents. Some couples choose to have a traditional registry in addition to a honeymoon fund.

Honeymoon Activity Ideas

Although filling every moment with thrilling adventures can be tempting, it is equally important to experience downtime. These moments can be as simple as taking a stroll by the beach, having breakfast together, or just relaxing. Contrarily, planned activities add excitement and energy to your honeymoon, creating unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. By balancing downtime and exciting activities, couples can enjoy their honeymoon to the max.
